Lars Von Trier: 'I'm A Nazi... I Understand Hitler'
May 18, 2011 at 10:09 AM

Lars Von Trier has a hit with his new movie at Cannes, but it was his press conference that is making headlines.

The maverick Danish director, who is receiving accolades for his Kirsten Dunst-starring apocalyptic tale "Melancholia," is no stranger to outrageous statements -- in 2005, he said President Bush dreams of being spanked by Condeleezza Rice -- shocked the assembled press with his answer to a question about his interest in the Nazi aesthetic.

"The only thing I can tell you is that I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew, then later on came [Danish and Jewish director] Susanne Bier, and suddenly I wasn't so happy about being a Jew. That was a joke. Sorry. But it turned out that I was not a Jew. If I'd been a Jew, then I would be a second-wave Jew, a kind of a new-wave Jew, but anyway, I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out that I was really a Nazi, because my family is German. And that also gave me some pleasure. So, I, what can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things but I can see him sitting in his bunker. I'm saying that I think I understand the man. He is not what we could call a good guy, but yeah, I understand much about him and I sympathize with him ... But come on! I'm not for the Second World War. And I'm not against Jews. No, not even Susanne Bier. I am very much for them. As much as Israelis are a pain in the ass. How do I get out of this sentence? Okay, I am a Nazi. As for the art, I'm for Speer. Albert Speer I liked. He was also one of God's best children. He has a talent that ... Okay, enough."

May 18, 2011 at 9:45 AM

NEW YORK (Grant McCool) - In a trial of three New York securities traders on insider trading charges, several jurors told the judge on Tuesday they could consider the case separately and impartially from last week's conviction of high-profile Galleon Group hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam.

Some of the potential jurors, however, were excused for possible bias from sitting for the Manhattan federal court trial of a former Rajaratnam employee, Zvi Goffer, and two other men who have had no association with Galleon.

Oprah Fans Gather In Chicago For United Center Taping: 'She's Like A Sister To Us'
May 18, 2011 at 9:29 AM

They came from across the nation and from all over Chicago, with several wearing homemade Oprah t-shirts and with one woman sporting the letters O-P-R-A-H on her head, to say farewell to the most successful talk show of the last quarter century and to be surprised -- along with Oprah Winfrey -- as star after star strolled out to tell her "thank you."

Thousands of fans at the United Center cheered Tuesday night as Tom Hanks told Oprah, "Today you are surrounded by nothing but love."

They continued clapping as Tom Cruise segued into Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban and Patti LaBelle, who all came out singing, roared when Beyonce, Diane Sawyer, Halle Berry, Rascal Flatts, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Stevie Wonder, Simon Cowell, Jerry Seinfeld, Maria Shriver, Rosie O' Donnell, Maya Angelou, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin and Usher took the state. But the audience stood and clapped loudest of all when Oprah herself, wearing a dark purple dress, first walked onto the stage to say hello.

It's easy to hit below the belt, but is it really necessary? Spirit, the airline who comes up with impossibly-timed ads poking fun at the latest headlines, is at it again, this time taking on the news of the Schwarzenegger love child.

News broke earlier this month that the 25-year marriage of the Arnold and Maria Shriver was kaput. Then came the revelation that Schwarzenegger fathered a love child, a son, nearly 20-years earlier with a member of his household staff, whose name, it was revealed on Tuesday, is Mildred Patricia Baena.

Gordon Fox Takes Heat For Gay Marriage Vote In Rhode Island
May 18, 2011 at 9:29 AM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The protests started as soon as Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox sounded the death knell for gay marriage legislation and said he'd back civil unions instead. A cop-out, gay marriage supporters said. A compromise for no one. One man made a sign proclaiming, "Fox Hunting Season is Open."

For the first openly gay House speaker in the nation, the protests were personal. But Fox, who sold ice cream to pay his way through law school and who cites Winston Churchill as a role model, knows something about persevering. About taking the long view. And about counting votes.

Conservatives Skeptical Of Geithner's Warning On Debt Ceiling Deadline
May 18, 2011 at 9:29 AM

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is facing growing criticism for his changing predictions on when the country might face a debt default, shifts that have led some Republicans to discount his dire warnings that the debt limit must be raised soon.

Since January, Geithner has changed his forecast of when the U.S. would hit its borrowing cap, and the final deadline for raising the debt limit, at least four times -- fueling a belief among rank-and-file Republicans that his latest Aug. 2 deadline is artificial and can be ignored.

Bing Director Stefan Weitz: 'Traditional Search Is Failing'
May 18, 2011 at 9:00 AM

Most people think about search as a simple series of actions: type in a phrase, cross your fingers it brings up what you need, and then click around a page of blue links till you get what you were looking for.

But Stefan Weitz, director of Microsoft's search engine Bing, says that we should expect more out of our search experience. He criticizes "traditional" search engines -- namely, web giant Google, Bing's main competitor -- for failing to keep up with the changing needs of users by sticking with the the search model they've always used, which is based on an algorithm measuring the strength of backlinks.

"When Google launched, they wanted to organize the world's information, that was their mantra -- it still is," Weitz said in an interview. "It was a great vision that assumed really the web of yore, which is a web of documents, literally pages and the connections. Google's whole mission was to leverage those connections and say, 'Okay, I can see that the connection between these two pages is almost as important as the page content itself in defining what these things are about' -- it was a brilliant, brilliant model."

"First of all, every player has played with gay guys," Barkley said. "It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say: 'Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.' First of all, quit telling me what I think. I'd rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can't play."

Armie Hammer In 'The Lone Ranger': Johnny Depp's Tonto Gets Teammate
May 18, 2011 at 8:46 AM

Since making audiences see double as both Winklevoss twins in "The Social Network," Armie Hammer has been working to plaster his face all over every other Hollywood epic, too. Now, we'll get to see how that increasingly ubiquitous face looks beneath a cowboy hat.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Hammer has officially won the role of the Lone Ranger in Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski's re-imagining of the classic western radio and TV serials. Hammer in late April was reported to be in negotiations for the part; previously, Ryan Gosling was rumored to be a potential fit.

The masked lawman part he'll take on, though, will be a bit different than the fearless avenger that people remember. Depp, who will be playing the Native American Tonto, is planning a different spin on the classic story; in this new version, Tonto will take the lead in fighting crime, instead of always listening to what the Ranger's commands.

California Retail Bond Investors: New Push To Reach Mom And Pop
May 18, 2011 at 8:28 AM

As California works to repair its budget, the state treasury is ramping up its effort to reach an unusual type of bond investor: regular people.

A new bill, supported by state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, would allow the state to issue $25 bonds, dropping the minimum bond size from $1,000 and broadening the field of potential buyers of California debt. For the state that bears the worst Standard & Poor's credit rating of all 50 states, the move could potentially lower borrowing costs, and it would give the government a wider set of buyers to turn to if institutional investors -- banks and funds -- turn up their noses.

Nationwide, states recognize the ability to sell debt to mom and pop investors as a useful tool, as institutional buyers prove fickle in the wake of the financial crisis. While it may be more complicated for states to manage a host of smaller bonds rather than a few large ones, issuing so-called retail bonds can give governments an edge in negotiations with the bigger buyers. As a result, governments may face lower costs as they borrow money to pave roads, repair bridges, and build hospitals and parks.
